Corporate Bulletin Number 11-00-90-001 (Section 00 - General Information).

GM dexos 1(TM) Information Center Website

Refer to the following General Motors website for dexos 1(TM) information about the different licensed brands that are currently available:

http://www.gmdexos.com

GM dexos 1(TM) Engine Oil Trademark and Icons

The dexos(TM) specification and trademarks are exclusive to General Motors, LLC.

Only those oils displaying the dexos(TM) trademark and icon on the front label meet the demanding performance requirements and stringent

2010 Cadillac Truck Escalade AWD V8-6.2L Page 347

quality standards set forth in the dexos(TM) specification.

Look on the front label for any of the logos shown above to identify an authorized, licensed dexos 1(TM) engine oil.

GM dexos 1(TM) Engine Oil Specification

Important

General Motors dexos 1(TM) engine oil specification replaces the previous General Motors specifications GM6094M, GM4718M and

GM-LL-A-025 for most GM gasoline engines. The oil specified for use in GM passenger cars and trucks, PRIOR to the 2011 model year

remains acceptable for those previous vehicles. However, dexos 1(TM) is backward compatible and can be used in those older vehicles.

In North America, starting with the 2011 model year, GM introduced dexos 1(TM) certified engine oil as a factory fill and service fill for gasoline

engines. The reasons for the new engine oil specification are as follows:

- To meet environmental goals such as increasing fuel efficiency and reducing engine emissions.

- To promote long engine life.

- To minimize the number of engine oil changes in order to help meet the goal of lessening the industry's overall dependence on crude oil.

dexos 1(TM) is a GM-developed engine oil specification that has been designed to provide the following benefits:

- Further improve fuel economy, to meet future corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) requirements and fuel economy retention by allowing

the oil to maintain its fuel economy benefits throughout the life of the oil.

- More robust formulations for added engine protection and aeration performance.

- Support the GM Oil Life System, thereby minimizing the replacement of engine oil, before its life has been depleted.

- Reduce the duplication of requirements for a large number of internal GM engine oil specifications.

Corvette Engines Built at Wixom That Require the Use of Mobil 1(TM) Oil

The following Corvette engines built at Wixom, Michigan are equipped with an OEM oil fill cap that identifies Mobil 1(TM), SAE 5W-30 as the

engine oil that is required to be used in these engines.

- Corvette Engines Built at Wixom - RPO LS7 and LS9 for the Z06 and ZR1

- Corvette Engine Built at Wixom - RPO LS3 for the Grand Sport Coupe with Manual Transmission

International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC)

GF-5 Standard

In addition to GM dexos 1(TM), a new International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) standard called GF-5, was

introduced in October 2010.

- There will be a corresponding API category, called: SN Resource Conserving. The current GF-4 standard was put in place in 2004 and

became obsolete in October 2011. Similar to dexos 1(TM), the GF-5 standard will use a new fuel economy test, Sequence VID, which

demands a statistically significant increase in fuel economy versus the Sequence VIB test that was used for GF-4.

- It is expected that all dexos 1(TM) approved oils will be capable of meeting the GF-5 standard. However, not all GF-5 engine oils will be

capable of meeting the dexos 1(TM) specification.

- Like dexos(TM) the new ILSAC GF-5 standard will call for more sophisticated additives. The API will begin licensing marketers during

October 2010, to produce and distribute GF-5 certified products, which are expected to include SAE 0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-20, 5W-30 and

2010 Cadillac Truck Escalade AWD V8-6.2L Page 348

10W-30 oils.

Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Requirements Effect on Fuel Economy

Since CAFE standards were first introduced in 1974, the fuel economy of cars has more than doubled, while the fuel economy of light trucks has

increased by more than 50 percent. Proposed CAFE standards call for a continuation of increased fuel economy in new cars and trucks. To meet

these future requirements, all aspects of vehicle operation are being looked at more critically than ever before.

New technology being introduced in GM vehicles designed to increase vehicle efficiency and fuel economy include direct injection, cam phasing,

turbocharging and active fuel management (AFM). The demands of these new technologies on engine oil also are taken into consideration when

determining new oil specifications. AFM for example can help to achieve improved fuel economy. However alternately deactivating and activating

the cylinders by not allowing the intake and exhaust valves to open contributes to additional stress on the engine oil.

Another industry trend for meeting tough fuel economy mandates has been a shift toward lower viscosity oils.

dexos 1(TM) will eventually be offered in several viscosity grades in accordance with engine needs: SAE 0W-20, 5W-20, 0W-30 and 5W-30.

Using the right viscosity grade oil is critical for proper engine performance. Always refer to the Maintenance section of a vehicle Owner Manual

for the proper viscosity grade for the engine being serviced.

GM Oil Life System in Conjunction With dexos(TM) Supports Extended Oil Change Intervals

To help conserve oil while maintaining engine protection, many GM vehicles are equipped with the GM Oil Life System. This system can provide

oil change intervals that exceed the traditional 3,000 mile (4,830 km) recommendation.

The dexos(TM) specification, with its requirements for improved oil robustness, compliments the GM Oil Life System by supporting extended oil

change intervals over the lifetime of a vehicle.

If all GM customers with GM Oil Life System equipped vehicles would use the system as intended, GM estimates that more than 100 million

gallons of oil could be saved annually.

Note

This condition may be intermittent, therefore it is important to check if a revised calibration has been released on TIS2WEB for this concern, even

if the condition cannot be duplicated at the dealer.

Cause

This condition may be caused by the rear heated seat module (RHSM) discharging the battery by keeping the serial data bus active, which creates a

cumulative continuous draw of four amps on the battery after the vehicle is shut down, until the state of charge reaches three volts.

Correction

Important

DO NOT replace the RHSM or the battery for this concern.

Reprogram the RHSM with the latest software calibration.

Important

with Gasoline-Powered Engines

Important:

This bulletin is not applicable to vehicles operating in Canada on Canadian sourced fuels. Canadian regulations limit the amount of sulfur in

gasoline to 80 PPM or less for all gasoline marketed in Canada with no exemptions.

Federal regulations limit the amount of sulfur in gasoline to 80 PPM (some states have lower limits; for example, California's limit is 30

PPM). The federal exception to this rule is an allowance for qualifying small refineries that permits up to 450 PPM until January 1, 2011. Sulfur

odor in exhaust from vehicles equipped with gasoline engines is caused by excess sulfur in the gasoline and it cannot be eliminated unless the

source of the sulfur is eliminated.

Important:

Replacement of catalytic converters for this condition is not an appropriate repair and will not correct the condition by itself.

Customers with vehicles that exhibit this condition should be advised of the information in this bulletin and be asked to switch the brand of gasoline

that they are using. In most cases, this will result in elimination of the sulfur odor by the time one tank full of gasoline is consumed if the gasoline

that was added is within the 80 PPM federal limit.

In order for the odor to be eliminated. two things must occur. First, the gasoline added to the vehicle must be at or below the federal 80 PPM limit.

Secondly, the vehicle must have run long enough to have consumed one tank of fuel containing a sulfur content of 80 PPM or less.

Although there is no way for a dealership to easily measure the amount of sulfur in gasoline, it's a good practice when asked for a recommended

brand of gasoline to recommend any of the Top Tier Detergent Gasoline Brands. Although Top Tier brands have not demonstrated that they contain

a lower sulfur content than other brands, their detergent additive package makes them a preferred choice when choosing a brand of gasoline for

your vehicle. A complete list of Top Tier Brands can be found in Corporate Bulletin Number 04-06-04-047H (in Canada, refer to Corporate

Bulletin Number 05-06-04-022E) or by accessing the website www.toptiergas.com.

This bulletin is being revised to add the 2010 model year and information about retrieving calibrations on a Global A vehicle. Please discard

Corporate Bulletin Number 09-06-04-026A (Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System).

General Motors is identifying an increasing number of engine, transmission and catalytic converter part failures that are the result of non-GM

(aftermarket) engine and transmission control calibrations being used.

When alteration to the GM-released engine or transmission control calibrations occurs, it subjects powertrain and driveline components (engine,

transmission, transfer case, driveshaft and rear axle) to stresses that were not tested by General Motors. It is because of these unknown stresses, and

the potential to alter reliability, durability and emissions performance, that GM has adopted a policy that prevents any UNAUTHORIZED dealer

warranty claim submissions to any remaining warranty coverage, to the powertrain and driveline components whenever the presence of a non-GM

(aftermarket) calibration is confirmed - even if the non-GM control module calibration is subsequently removed.

Warranty coverage is based on the equipment and calibrations that were released on the vehicle at time of sale, or subsequently updated by GM.

That's because GM testing and validation matches the calibration to a host of criteria that is essential to assure reliability, durability and emissions

performance over the life of the warranty coverage and beyond. Stresses resulting from calibrations different from those tested and released by GM

can damage or weaken components, leading to poor performance and or shortened life.

Additionally, non-GM (aftermarket) issued engine control modifications often do not meet the same emissions performance standards as GM issued

calibrations. Depending on state statutes, individuals who install engine control module calibrations that put the vehicle outside the parameters of

emissions certification standards may be subject to fines and/or penalties.

This bulletin outlines a procedure to identify the presence of non-GM (aftermarket) calibrations. GM recommends performing this check whenever

a hard part failure is seen on internal engine or transmission components, or before an engine assembly or transmission assembly is being replaced

under warranty. It is also recommended that the engine calibration verification procedure be performed whenever diagnostics indicate that catalytic

converter replacement is indicated.

The PQC has a process to confirm the ECM/PCM calibration is GM issued. The PQC will require a picture of the engine calibration verification

screen, as outlined in this bulletin, before authorizing any V8 gas powered engine replacement.

If a non-GM calibration is found and verification has taken place through GM, the remaining powertrain and driveline warranty will be blocked and

notated in GMVIS and the dealership will be notified. This block prevents any UNAUTHORIZED warranty claim submission.

1. Connect the Tech 2(R) to the vehicle.

2. Go to: Diagnostics and build the vehicle.

3. Select: Powertrain.

4. Select: Engine.

5. *Select: Engine Control Module or PCM.

Mirrors - Heated Mirrors, Defrosting Time

INFORMATION

Bulletin No.: 08-08-64-011A

Date: February 25, 2010

Subject: Information on Heated Electrochromatic Outside Rearview Mirror Performance

Models:

2010 and Prior GM Passenger Cars and Light Duty Trucks (including Saturn)

2009 and Prior HUMMER H2, H3

2009 and Prior Saab 9-7X

Supercede:

This bulletin is being revised to update the model years. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 08-08-64-011 (Section 08 - Body and

Accessories).

Defrosting Time/Performance Concern

The electrochromatic (auto-dimming) outside rearview mirror used on the driver's side of many GM vehicles is slower to defrost than the passenger

side outside rearview mirror.

This is a normal condition. The glass on the driver's side electrochromatic mirror is twice as thick as the traditional glass on the passenger side

mirror. The heating elements for the mirrors on both sides draw the same wattage, therefore the driver's side mirror will take approximately twice as

long to defrost as the passenger mirror (approximately four minutes versus two minutes). Should a customer indicate that the driver's side heated

mirror is not functioning correctly, verify it's function based upon this information prior to replacing the mirror.

Electrical - Aftermarket Devices May Interfere With OnStar(R)

INFORMATION

Bulletin No.: 08-08-46-004A

Date: November 30, 2012

Subject: (R)Information on Aftermarket Device Interference with OnStar Diagnostic Services

Models:

2013 and Prior GM Passenger Cars and Trucks

Equipped with OnStar(R) (RPO UE1)

Supercede:

This bulletin is being revised to add the 2010-2013 model years. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 08-08-46-004 (Section 08 - Body and

Accessories).

This bulletin is being issued to provide dealer service personnel with information regarding aftermarket devices connected to the Diagnostic Link

Connector (DLC) and the impact to OnStar(R) diagnostic probes and Vehicle Diagnostic e-mails.

Certain aftermarket devices, when connected to the Diagnostic Link Connector, such as, but not limited to, Scan Tools, Trip Computers, Fuel

Economy Analyzers and Insurance Tracking Devices, interfere with OnStar's ability to perform a diagnostic probe when requested (via a blue

button call) by a subscriber. These devices also prohibit the ability to gather diagnostic and tire pressure data for a subscriber's scheduled OnStar(R)

Vehicle Diagnostic (OVD) e-mail.

These aftermarket devices utilize the Vehicle's serial data bus to perform data requests and/or information gathering. When these devices are

requesting data, OnStar(R) is designed not to interfere with any data request being made by these devices as required by OBD II regulations.

The OnStar(R) advisor is unable to definitively detect the presence of these devices and will only be able to inform the caller or requester of the

unsuccessful or incomplete probe and may in some cases refer the subscriber/requester to take the vehicle to a dealer for diagnosis of the concern.

When performing a diagnostic check for an unsuccessful or incomplete OnStar(R) diagnostic probe, or for concerns regarding completeness of the

OnStar(R) Vehicle Diagnostic (OVD) e-mail, verify that an aftermarket device was not present at the time of the requested probe. Regarding the

OVD e-mail, if an aftermarket device is interfering (including a Scan Tool of any type), the e-mail will consistently display a "yellow" indication in

diagnostics section for all vehicle systems except the OnStar(R) System and Tire Pressure data (not available on all vehicles) will not be displayed

(i.e. section is collapsed). Successful diagnostic probes and complete OVD e-mails will resume following the removal or disconnecting of the

off-board device.

Body - Non-Approval of Clipping For Collision Repair

INFORMATION

Bulletin No.: 07-08-98-001A

Date: January 28, 2009

Subject:

Non-approval of "Clipping" (Sectioning of Two Vehicles) For Collision Repair

Models:

2000-2010 GM Passenger Cars and Trucks (Including Saturn and Saab)

2003-2010 HUMMER H2, H3, H3T

Supercede:

This bulletin is being revised to add model years through 2010. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 07-08-98-001 (Section 08 - Body and

Accessories).

General Motors does not approve the use of "clipping" to repair collision damage to vehicles. In the collision repair industry, "clipping" refers to

cutting two damaged vehicles through the windshield pillars, the rocker panels, and across the floor pan and joining the undamaged portions from

these vehicles to make the repair.

The use of "clipping" voids GM's New Vehicle Limited Warranty (and any variety of the GM Protection Plan, as well as GM's new vehicle service

part and corrosion warranties) for each part in the clip.

GM does not sanction clipping repair because it cuts across the major load-bearing paths of a vehicle and can reduce the structural integrity of the

repaired vehicle. This is extremely critical because of the increase in the use of Advance High Strength Steel (AHSS). Improper repairs can lead to

vehicle performance issues related to noise, vibration and handling problems.

GM recommends replacing body components at factory seams. When applicable, GM will provide a specific service part for collision repair frames,

or provide repair information on how to create specific parts from a complete service assembly. Frame repair procedures for select GM vehicles are

available at http://www.goodwrench.com/gmgoodwrenchjsp/gmspo/techrepair_index.jsp. These parts and procedures provide a practical and

cost-effective alternative to clipping. GM provides vehicle specific collision repair procedures which are developed to be in a location and fashion

2010 Cadillac Truck Escalade AWD V8-6.2L Page 227

that will yield panel strength comparable to the original panel strength. Replacing damaged parts of a vehicle designed to crush in a collision may

reduce occupant protection in a future collision.

GM has not tested or validated a "clipped vehicle" repair; therefore, GM cannot endorse this type of repair or confirm the crash performance during

a subsequent collision. GM recommends the use of genuine GM parts in repairs to help ensure the vehicle is returned to pre-collision condition.

Important

Installation of an electric brake controller and the wiring connections outlined in this bulletin are the responsibility of the dealership or

customer. These repairs should never be charged to warranty. If you have any questions, please consult with your District Service

Manager.

Some customers may have questions on how to connect an electric trailer brake controller or where the brake controller pigtail harness is located.

Starting with the new 2007 full-size utilities and pickups and 2008 HUMMER H2, there is no longer an electric trailer brake controller pigtail

harness.

An aftermarket brake controller will need to be installed/connected to the blunt wires under the left side of the IP for vehicles built without JL1 -

Integrated Brake Controller (full-size utilities and pickups). The following steps should be used to complete the installation.

2010 Cadillac Truck Escalade AWD V8-6.2L Page 319

1. Locate the trailer brake control circuits that are looped and taped to the main harness under the instrument panel.

2. Pull the trailering wire harness down.

3. Match the vehicle harness label circuit functions to the trailer brake controller jumper harness functions.

Important

The color or wires to be joined together may not match.

- Dark Blue Wire: switched power from controller to trailer brakes

- Red with Black Stripe: fused vehicle power to electrical brake controller

- Light Blue with White Stripe: Brake switch input to power electric brake controller

- White: ground

- Orange: CHMSL (Center High Mounted Stop Lamp) - not required with most systems

4. After completing the under dash connections to the electric brake controller, open the hood and locate the red wire that is taped to the harness

2010 Cadillac Truck Escalade AWD V8-6.2L Page 320

between the underhood electrical center and the driver side front fender.

5. Break the tape on the red/black wire and pull it toward the front of vehicle.

6. Remove the lid from the electrical center.

Important

Ensure that the ringlets are not interfering with the UBEC cover.

7. Place the terminal on the larger of the two studs at the front of the electrical center and secure with an M8 nut. This is circuit #242 to stud #2,

to power the aftermarket trailer brake controller.

Important

The fuse is already present in the vehicle to power the electrical trailer brake controller system.

Auxiliary Power (Applies to All LD & 07-09 HD's Only)

Circuit #742 for Auxiliary Power at the 7-way trailer connector is no longer connected by the GM Assembly Plant. If the customer desires auxiliary

power at the trailer connector location (i.e. refrigeration, battery charger or interior light in the trailer), complete the following steps to connect

circuit #742:

1. Locate the red/black wire, looped and taped to the chassis harness, below the brake master cylinder.

2. Break the tape and route the wire to the front of the underhood electrical center.

Important

Ensure that the ringlets are not interfering with the UBEC cover.

3. Place the terminal on the smaller of the two studs on the electrical center and secure with an M6 fastener. This is circuit #742 to stud #1 for

auxiliary power to the 7-way trailer connector.

4. ONLY for vehicles without RPO TP2 - Auxiliary Battery, install a 40 amp fuse to power the circuit.

Important

For vehicles equipped with RPO TP2 - Devices powered by this fuse will drain the vehicle battery if left connected with the vehicle not

running.

Warranty Information

This installation procedure is to be performed at the customer's request and at their expense. It is not a warranty repair and a claim should not be

submitted for reimbursement.

Some customers may comment that there are unusual fan type noises coming from the navigation radio. Additionally, the customer may comment

on radio noise coming from the CD/DVD or MAP disc mechanisms when CDs/DVDs or MAP discs are present in the CD mechanisms. Some

customers have mentioned that radio noise is present when the customer enters the vehicle or that the noise continues after they shut the vehicle off

and open the door to leave the vehicle. This noise has been described as a fan sound or hearing a disc spinning.

Source of fan sound - It is normal for the radio fan to run when the vehicle is turned on and for up to three minutes after the vehicle has been

turned off and the driver's door has been opened or closed.

Disc spinning sound - This is a normal operational sound. This is caused by the map disc spinning behind the tilt screen. It is a normal operation

after the RKE is used to unlock the vehicle or when the driver's door has been opened. This noise will also be heard during vehicle operation and up

to three minutes after the vehicle has been turned off and driver's door has been opened and closed.

MAP Disc Accessing "ZIP" sound - As the Navigation Radio accesses the MAP Disc, the customer may describe frequent "zip" type noises. This

noise is caused by the CD Read Lens moving across the disc to access needed data for proper MAP display. To determine if the source of the noise

is from accessing the MAP Disc, remove the MAP Disc to determine if the noise continues. With the addition of the Real Time NAV Traffic

Feature, the MAP CD may be accessed to a greater extent thus resulting in additional MAP Drive noise.

Inform the customer about these noises. If the customer believes the noise is not normal, compare the condition to a like vehicle with identical

settings to determine if there is a noticeable difference.

Do not replace the radio as the described conditions are normal operating characteristics.

Service is Important to You and Your Customer

General Motors takes great pride in offering our dealerships and customers high quality vehicles that require extremely low maintenance over the

life of the vehicle. This low cost of ownership builds repeat sales and offers our customers measurable economy of operation against competing

vehicles. Our goal is to make the customer experience a key driver of why customers purchase GM products and services. Providing

responsible services at the proper intervals supports this goal and will help your dealership earn repeat business.

An Overview of Proper Vehicle Service

Today, many of your service departments merchandise supplemental services and fluids to customers indicating that these "flushes" have a positive

effect on durability of the component part. It should be noted that analyses of returned parts that have been exposed to these aftermarket "flushes"

show indications of potential damage and shortened durability.

The following information clearly defines the guidelines for servicing GM vehicles.

GM Authorized Service Information is Detailed, Descriptive and Complete

If GM determines that a specific model vehicle or powertrain needs supplemental service, GM will issue an Authorized Service Document with

detailed service procedures that will identify any machine, tool or chemical required to conduct proper vehicle servicing. Listed below are a few

examples of those messages as well as additional guidelines:

Engine Crankcase Flushing

General Motors Corporation does not endorse or recommend engine crankcase flushing for any of its gasoline engines. Analysis of some of

the aftermarket materials used for crankcase flushing indicate incompatibility with GM engine components and the potential for damage to some

engine seals and bearings. Damage to engine components resulting from crankcase flushing IS NOT COVERED under the terms of the New

Vehicle Warranty.

Subsystem Flushing

Flushing of air conditioning (A/C) lines, radiators, transmission coolers, and power steering systems are recognized practices to be performed after

catastrophic failures or extreme corrosion when encountered in radiators. For acceptable A/C flushing concerns, refer to the Flushing procedure in

2010 Cadillac Truck Escalade AWD V8-6.2L Page 22

Service Information (SI). This practice is not required or recommended for normal service operations.

The use of external transmission fluid exchange or flush machines is not recommended for the automatic or manual transmission. Use of external

machines to replace the fluid may affect the operation or durability of the transmission. Transmission fluid should only be replaced by draining and

refilling following procedures in Service Information (SI). Refer to Automatic/Manual Transmission Fluid and Filter Replacement.

Approved Transmission Flushing Tool (Transmission Cooler Only)

The Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flow Check and Flush Tool IS recommended for GM vehicles. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flow

Check and Flush in the Service Information website using the J-45096.

Our Commitment to providing Quality Service to Our Customers

Customers will appreciate and trust dealerships that inform and offer them what they truly need for continued trouble-free operation of their GM

vehicle. Examine your service department's practices and verify that all Service Advisors and Technicians focus on providing a truly exceptional

service experience through vehicle inspections and offering appropriate products at time of service. Use this opportunity to leverage recent

technology including the Service Workbench Menu and Inspection Tool Kit and review the services you provide to your customers. Here are a few

suggestions:

- Review your processes to ensure that your service team performs a Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection on every vehicle visiting your service

lane. Use the electronic Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection process in the Service Workbench to document vehicle needs and evaluate them for

safety and wear items. This information can be quickly integrated into your marketing efforts and the Customer Sales and Service Retention

(CSSR) program to personalize the message to your customers.

- Take the time required to align your dealership service practices with the GM Simplified Maintenance Schedule and use the Service

Workbench Menu tool to ensure consistent pricing for each customer.

- Maintain your service expertise through GM Training and ASE Certification of your technicians.

- Finally, take advantage of the Certified Service initiatives that continue drive service customers to your dealership.

2010 Cadillac Truck Escalade AWD V8-6.2L Page 128

The Use of "Surface Conditioning Disks"

Notice

Do not use abrasive pad/bristle devices to clean the gasket surfaces of engine components. Abrasive pads should not be used for the following

reasons:

- Abrasive pads will produce fine grit that the oil filter will not be able to remove from the oil. THIS GRIT IS ABRASIVE AND HAS BEEN

KNOWN TO CAUSE INTERNAL ENGINE DAMAGE. Abrasive pads can easily remove enough material to round cylinder head surfaces.

This has been known to affect the gasket's ability to seal, especially in the narrow seal areas between the combustion chambers and coolant

jackets.

- Abrasive pads, wire and abrasive rubber finger wheels can also remove enough metal to affect cylinder head, block, oil pan rail, and intake

manifold runner flatness, which can cause coolant and oil leaks and air leaks. It takes about 15 seconds to remove 0.203 mm (0.008 in) of

metal with an abrasive pad.

- Abrasive pads, Abrasive rubber fingers wheels & wire wheels with high speeds grinders produce air bourn debris that can travel throughout

the shop contaminating other work being performed outside of the immediate work area.

When cleaning engine gasket sealing surfaces and/or cleaning parts from an engine that are to be reused, surface conditioning disks (typically

constructed of woven fiber or molded bristles) that contain abrasives, such as a high amount of Aluminum Oxide, should NOT be used.

The use of such surface conditioning disks dislodges Aluminum Oxide (from the disk) and metal particles, which can lead to premature engine

bearing failure.

The presence of Aluminum Oxide in engine oil has been shown to cause premature engine bearing failure. In some cases, this failure occurs in as

little as 2,200 km (1,000 mi) or less after the repair has been made.

Surface conditioning disks may grind the component material and imbed it into the disk. This can result when more aggressive grinding of the

gasket surface takes place.

Recommended Cleaning Procedure

General Motors recommends the use of a razor blade or plastic gasket scraper to clean the gasket surface on engine components that are to be

reused. When cleaning gasket surfaces, please note the following:

- When using a razor blade type gasket scraper, use a new razor blade for each cylinder head and corresponding block surface. Hold the blade

as parallel to the gasket surface as possible. This will ensure that the razor blade does not gouge or scratch the gasket surfaces.

- Do not gouge or scrape the combustion chamber surfaces.

- Do not gouge or scratch any engine-sealing surface during the cleaning process.

Alternative Cleaning Method:

To properly clean the sealing surface prior to reassembly, GM Low VOC Cleaner, P/N 19287401 (in Canada, PN 88901247), should be sprayed on

the mating surface. Use care to avoid getting solvent in any area other than the mating surface to be cleaned. Allow it to soak in for several minutes

to loosen the old RTV sealer/gasket material. GM strongly recommends using a plastic razor blade or non- metallic scraper to remove all loose

sealer/gasket material.

Important

The appearance of the gasket surface is not critical - the feel is. There will be indentations from the gasket left in the cylinder head after all

the gasket material is removed. The new gasket will fill these small indentations when it is installed.
