- Passenger Compartment Dimming Request Signal Circuit Voltage Below Threshold

Diagnostic Fault Information

Circuit/System Description

The instrument panel (I/P) lamp dimmer switch is used to increase and decrease the brightness of the interior backlighting components. The I/P

dimmer switch provides a voltage signal that will increase as the brightness of the lights are increased and decrease as the brightness of the lights

are decreased. The body control module (BCM) provides a low reference signal and a B+ voltage reference to the I/P dimmer switch. When the I/P

dimmer switch is placed in the desired position, the dimmed voltage setting is applied from the I/P dimmer switch through the I/P dimmer switch

signal circuit to the BCM. The BCM interprets the signal and applies the dimmed voltage to the I/P lamps supply voltage circuit and the interior

backlighting components dim to the requested level.

Conditions for Running the DTC

Battery voltage must be between 9-16 V.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The BCM detects a short to ground or an open/high resistance in the I/P dimmer switch signal circuit.

Actions Taken When the DTC Sets

* The I/P dimmer switch will not operate.

* The I/P dimming lamps will not illuminate.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

* The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.

* A history DTC will clear once 100 consecutive malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

- Lost Communication With Yaw Rate Sensor (YRS)

Circuit/System Description

Modules connected to the CAN bus serial data circuits monitor for serial data communications during normal vehicle operation. Operating

information and commands are exchanged among the modules. The modules have prerecorded information about what messages are needed to be

exchanged on the serial data circuits. The messages are supervised and also, some periodic messages are used by the receiver module as an

availability indication of the transmitter module. Each message contains the identification number of the transmitter module.

The electronic brake control module (EBCM) activates the other modules connected to the CAN serial data circuits by applying voltage when the

ignition key is in ACC, ON or START. The EBCM, Yaw Rate and Lateral Acceleration Sensor are the only modules connected to the CAN bus

serial data circuits. For more information on CAN bus serial data refer to Data Link Communications Description and Operation (See: Powertrain

Management/Computers and Control Systems/Information Bus/Description and Operation).

Conditions for Running the DTC

* The system voltage is between 9-16 volts.

* The vehicle power mode master requires serial data communication to occur.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

A supervised periodic message that includes the transmitter module availability has not been received.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

* The vehicle stability enhancement system (VSES), if equipped, and traction control system (TCS) will not function.

* System OFF lamps will illuminate for these systems.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

* A current DTC clears when the malfunction is no longer present.

* A history DTC clears when the module ignition cycle counter reaches the reset threshold of 50, without a repeat of the malfunction.

Diagnostic Aids

* Sometimes, while diagnosing a specific customer concern or after a repair, you may notice a history U-code present. However, there is no

associated "current" or "active" status. Loss-of- communication U-codes such as these can set for a variety of reasons. Many times, they are

transparent to the vehicle operator and technician, and/or have no associated symptoms. Eventually, they will erase themselves automatically

after a number of fault-free ignition cycles. This condition would most likely be attributed to one of these scenarios:

- A control module on the data communication circuit was disconnected while the communication circuit is awake.

- Power to one or more modules was interrupted during diagnosis.

- A low battery condition was present, so some control modules stop communicating when battery voltage drops below a certain threshold.

- Battery power was restored to the vehicle and control modules on the communication circuit did not all re-initialize at the same time.

- If a loss-of-communication U-code appears in history for no apparent reason, it is most likely associated with one of the scenarios above.

These are all temporary conditions and should never be interpreted as an intermittent fault, causing you to replace a part.

* A control module may have a U-code stored in history that does not require any repairs. Issues with late or corrupted messages between

control modules can be temporary with no apparent symptom or complaint; this does not mean the control module is faulty. Do not replace a

control module based only on a history U-code.

* Do not replace a control module reporting a U-code. The U-code identifies which control module needs to be diagnosed for a communication

issue.

* Communication may be available between the BCM and the scan tool with either the low or high speed GMLAN serial data system

inoperative. This condition is due to the BCM using both the low and high speed GMLAN systems.

* Use to determine if the module uses high or low speed GMLAN serial data communications.

* Some control modules may not have internal protection for specific control circuits and may open a B+ or ignition fuse. If a fuse is open and

the B+ or ignition circuit is not shorted to ground, ensure none of the control circuits are shorted to ground before replacing the control

module.

* This diagnostic can be used for any control module that is not communicating, regardless of the type of serial data circuit it is connected to,

providing the vehicle is equipped with the control module.

Diagnostic Fault Information

Circuit/System Description

Modules connected to the high and low speed GMLAN serial data circuits monitor for serial data communications during normal vehicle operation.

Operating information and commands are exchanged among the modules. The modules have prerecorded information about what messages are

needed to be exchanged on the serial data circuits, for each virtual network. The messages are supervised and also, some periodic messages are

used by the receiver module as an availability indication of the transmitter module. Each message contains the identification number of the

transmitter module.

The SDGM energizes the wake up signal to activate the accessory DC power control module (APM) and another wake up signal to activate the

hybrid powertrain control module (HPCM) which is inside the drive motor power inverter module (PIM). The HPCM reports all DTC for the APM,

therefore DTC U189A cannot be reported with the HPCM is inoperative.

Conditions for Running the DTC

* The system voltage is between 9-16 volts.

* The vehicle power mode master requires serial data communication to occur.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

* The HPCM does not receive voltage from the SDGM on the wake up signal circuit.

* The wake up circuit between the SDGM and the APM is shorted to voltage.

* Any of the 4 PTLAN circuits connected to the HPCM are open.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

The modules is never signaled, therefore the specific subsystems may not function. Depending on the fault, the MIL, battery indicator may

illuminate and several DIC messages be present.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

The pedestrian impact detection module uses vehicle acceleration information from the safing sensor and force information from the discrimination

sensor to determine those events when the deployment of the hood hinge actuator is expected. The pedestrian hood actuators deploy only when a

valid signal whose energy is capable of triggering deployment of the hood is present. During a frontal pedestrian impact of sufficient force, the

pedestrian impact detection module will allow current to flow through the deployment loop in order to deploy the hood hinge actuator. The

pedestrian impact detection module provides a minimum of 1.2 amps and a maximum of 1.95 amps of current for a minimum of 2 ms when an

actuator deployment is commanded. The pedestrian impact detection module performs continuous diagnostic tests on the deployment loops to

check for proper circuit continuity. The pedestrian impact detection module sets this DTC in the current ignition cycle when a hood hinge actuator

deployment has been commanded. After a deployment, the hood hinge actuators and the pedestrian impact detection module need to be replaced.

Conditions for Running the DTC

Ignition voltage is between 9-16 volts.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

* The pedestrian impact detection module detects a frontal impact to warrant deployment of the hood hinge actuators.

* The pedestrian impact detection module provides a minimum of 1.2 amps and a maximum of 1.95 amps of current for a minimum of 2 ms to

command deployment of the hood hinge actuators

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

* The pedestrian impact detection module commands the DIC to display Reset Hood See Owners Manual for the following two ignition cycles.

* The pedestrian impact detection module commands the DIC to display Service Pedestrian Protection System at the third ignition cycle after

the hood hinge actuators have been deployed until service is performed.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

* The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.

* A history DTC will clear once 40 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

DTC P1682

- Ignition 1 Switch Circuit 2

Diagnostic Fault Information

Typical Scan Tool Data

Circuit/System Description

There are 2 ignition voltage circuits supplied to the engine control module (ECM). The first ignition circuit is provided by the powertrain relay,

through a fuse. This ignition voltage circuit supplies power to all the internal ECM circuits associated with the throttle actuator control (TAC)

operation. The second ignition voltage circuit is supplied by the run/crank relay through a fuse, and is used to power the remaining internal ECM

circuits. If the ECM detects a voltage difference between the 2 ignition voltage circuits, DTC P1682 will set.

Conditions for Running the DTC

* The ignition is ON.

* System voltage is more than 7 V.

* The powertrain relay is commanded ON.

* DTC P1682 runs continuously when the above conditions are met.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The ECM detects that the voltage level difference is greater than 3 V between the 2 ignition 1 voltage circuits for less than 1 s.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTC P1682 is a Type A DTC.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P1682 is a Type A DTC.

DTC Descriptor

DTC P1629

- Theft Deterrent Fuel Enable Signal Not Received

Circuit/System Description

The theft deterrent module (TDM) sends the prerelease password to the engine control module (ECM) via the serial data circuit. The ECM then

sends a challenge to the TDM. Both the ECM and TDM perform a calculation on this challenge. If the calculated response from the TDM equals

the calculation performed by the ECM, the ECM will allow vehicle starting.

Conditions for Running the DTC

* Ignition is in the ACCESSORY or RUN position.

* The ECM is not in learn mode.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The ECM receives does not receive the challenge response from the TDM within the required amount of time.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

The security indicator will illuminate.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

* A current DTC P1629 will be cleared when a challenge response is received.

* A history DTC will be cleared after 40 malfunction-free ignition cycles or when a scan tool is used to clear DTCs.

Diagnostic Aids

DTC P1629 is an indicator that the challenge/response was not received within the required time. This does not necessarily indicate a fault is

present with the TDM or ECM. Factors such as a long engine crank, a delay in the serial data communication, or B-codes set in the TDM will cause

DTC P1629 to set. This DTC should not be used as a fault indicator, but rather as a symptom to assist in the diagnosis of these other systems.
