Vehicle - VIN Number Structure Changes

Subject: 2010 Model Year Car and Light Duty Truck Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Structure Changes



Models:



2010 GM Passenger Cars and Light Duty Trucks (Including Saturn and Saab)



2010 HUMMER H2, H3



To comply with regulatory changes beginning with the 2010 model year, General Motors is making changes to the VIN system. The VIN changes



will allow the time period to increase from 30 years to 60 years before VINs will repeat. The new system will also identify restraint systems and



their locations for light duty trucks. The VIN will remain 17 digits.



2010 VIN Changes



PASSENGER CAR



VIN position 7 restraint system will change from numeric only to alpha only.



LIGHT DUTY TRUCK, MULTIPURPOSE PASSENGER VEHICLE (MPV) AND INCOMPLETE VEHICLE



^ VIN position 4 GVWR/brake system will now include body style and become alphanumeric.



^ VIN position 6 series will change from numeric only to alphanumeric.



^ VIN position 7 body type will change to restraint system and from numeric only to alpha only.



VIN Information in GlobalConnect (U.S.)



To access the VIN decoding information in GlobalConnect:



1. Log into GlobalConnect.



2. Select Workbenches.



3. Select Service.



4. On the Service page, select Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Information.



5. You may access VIN information ranging from the current model year back to 1972 by simply clicking on the model year you wish to view from



the displayed list. The information on the web is presented as an electronic version of the familiar VIN card in the identical format (.pdf file). If you

do not have unlimited access to the web, you may print the VIN information or save the individual model year file to your hard drive for use offline



in Windows(R) by selecting:



^ "File"



^ Then select "Save As"



^ Give the file a name and save it to a preferred location on your hard drive.



6. If you do not have access to Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Information, contact your Partner Security Coordinator (PSC).



VIN Information in GlobalConnect (Canada)



To access the VIN decoding information in GlobalConnect:



1. Log into GlobalConnect.



2. Select Library



3. Expand the Service category (click the boxed arrow preceding Service to expand and view sub-categories).



4. Select the Vehicle Information sub-category and then select "VIN card/Carte num闁瀉le NIV (2009-2003)".



5. You may access VIN information ranging from the current model year back to 2003 by simply clicking on the model year you wish to view from



the displayed list. The information on the web is presented as an electronic version of the familiar VIN card in the identical format (.pdf file). If you



do not have unlimited access to the web, you may print the VIN information or save the individual model year file to your hard drive for use offline



in Windows(R) by selecting:



^ "File"



^ Then select "Save As"



^ Give the file a name and save it to a preferred location on your hard drive.



6. If you do not have access to Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Information, contact your Partner Security Coordinator (PSC).



VIN Information in SI



To access the VIN decoding information in SI:



1. At the SI homepage, enter a VIN or build a vehicle with Year, Make and Model.



2. Select "Service Manual/Bulletins".



3. Select the "General Information" section.



4. Select the "General Information" section again.



5. Select the "Introduction" subsection.



6. Select the "Vehicle, Engine and Transmission ID and VIN Location, Derivative and Usage" for vehicle specific VIN code information.



VIN Information On the Web



Important:



VIN information on the web is available without any password, account or login requirements. This method of access should now be used as the



primary source for government agencies, customers, independent repair facilities and any other outside body that requires GM VIN decoding



information.



Important:



For dealers in Canada, VIN information is also available on GM GlobalConnect in English and French languages.



To access GM VIN information on the web:



1. Direct your internet browser to: www.acdelcotechconnect.com.

2. On the homepage, there is a link along the left side of the page labeled "GM VIN Information." Click the link (1) as shown in the graphic above.
