Cadillac ATS AWD V6-3.6L Technical Problem # 12309 Date: 130103
Campaign - Engine Cooling Fan Inoperative
SERVICE UPDATE
Bulletin No.: 12309
Date: January 03, 2013
Subject: 12309 Service Update for Inventory and Customer Vehicles Engine Cooling Fan Inoperative Expires with Base Warranty
Models:
2013 Cadillac ATS
This service update includes vehicles in dealer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the dealership for any reason. This bulletin
will expire at the end of the involved vehicle's New Vehicle Limited Warranty period.
Purpose
This bulletin provides a service procedure to inspect and, if necessary, replace the cooling fan module on certain 2013 model year Cadillac ATS
vehicles. The solder on the printed circuit board may have been cracked in production and cause the cooling fan to become inoperative. If this
occurs, Driver Information Center (DIC) messages and warning lights (continuous or flashing) will illuminate, and a chime will sound (one time or
continuous) to warn of an engine overheat condition. If these warnings are ignored and the vehicle continues to be driven, the vehicle will expel
coolant on the ground, the Service Engine Soon light will illuminate, and the engine will operate at reduced engine speed.
This service procedure should be completed as soon as possible on involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory and customer vehicles
that return to the dealer for any type of service during the New Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage period.
Vehicles Involved
All involved vehicles are identified by VIN in the Global Warranty Management System - Investigate Vehicle History Application. Dealership
technicians should always check this site to confirm vehicle involvement prior to beginning any required inspections and/or repairs. It is important to
routinely use this tool to verify eligibility because not all similar vehicles may be involved regardless of description or option content.
Additionally, a list of involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory is available on the "Service Update Bulletin Information" link under the
"Service" tab in GM GlobalConnect (US) or attached to the GlobalConnect message (Canada) used to release this bulletin. Customer vehicles that
return for service, for any reason, and are still covered under the vehicle's base warranty should also be checked for vehicle eligibility.
Parts Information
Parts required to complete this service update are to be obtained from General Motors Customer Care and Aftersales (GMCC&A). Please refer to
your "involved vehicles listing" before ordering parts. Normal orders should be placed on a DRO = Daily Replenishment Order. In an emergency
situation, parts should be ordered on a CSO = Customer Special Order.
Service Procedure
2013 Cadillac ATS AWD V6-3.6L 62
1. Determine if the vehicle is equipped with a four cylinder engine or six cylinder engine.
- If the vehicle is equipped with a four cylinder engine, inspect the date code information on the face of the fan control module using a flash
light. Access to view the fan control module is on the driver's side of the engine compartment. The module is attached to the cooling fan
assembly. Proceed to Step 3. Refer to illustration between Steps 2-3.
- If the vehicle is equipped with a six cylinder engine, proceed to Step 2.
2. Remove the fan control module. Refer to Fan Control Module Replacement in SI.
Note
There are four lines of alpha-numeric characters on the face of the fan control module (1). The fourth line includes the date code information.
The third and fourth characters on the fourth line provide the year (2) and the fifth, sixth and seventh characters on the fourth line provide the
number of days in the year (3). Fan modules with a date code of 12208 (26JUL12) or greater are good fan control modules. Fan control
modules with a date code of 12207 (25JUL12) or less are suspect fan control modules. Replace ALL modules that have a date code of 12207
(25JUL12) or less.
3. Locate the date code on the fan control module (1) to determine if the fan control module has a suspect date code (2) (3).
- If the date code (2) (3) on the fan control module (1) is less than or equal to 12207 (25JUL12), replace the fan control module with a new
fan control module. Refer to Fan Control Module Replacement in SI.
- If the date code on the fan control module is greater than 12207 (25JUL12), re-install the fan control module. Refer to Fan Control
Module Replacement in SI.
